The 4 hallmarks of a healthy indoor climate

Most people do not seem to realise, yet the indoor air quality in our homes is often poorer than the air outdoors. Nonetheless, it is important to be alive to the indoor climate, if only by reason of the fact that we spend a staggering 80 to 90% of our time inside our homes. In addition, a healthy indoor climate is about more than just good air quality. Here are 4 tips to help you enjoy a healthier lifestyle!

Temperature

Een gezond binnenklimaat

The ideal indoor temperature for an average home should comply with three requirements. The temperature should be:

  • kept as constant as possible,

  • sit somewhere between 19 and 22 °C,

  • and above all else, not be too low.

Is your home fitted with underfloor heating? In that case, 19 to 20 °C is a comfortable temperature. If you have radiators, feel free to turn up the thermostat a little: 21 to 22 °C is perfect.

Air humidity

The air humidity inside the home too is important for your health as well as the health of your home. The humidity level inside the home can be measured using a hygrometer. Ideally, the air humidity should be somewhere between 40 and 60%. Overly dry air is just as bad for human health as air that contains too much moisture, as this will cause irritation to the eyes and skin. If you wear contact lenses, you are bound to have suffered the consequences of unduly dry air at home or at the office.

Healthy indoor climate thanks to ventilation

An easy way of keeping the air inside your home healthy is by aerating the rooms on a regular basis. The easiest way to do so is by opening the windows, but you can also opt for ventilation that works around the clock. If you are going for a mechanical ventilation system, bear in mind that the filters should be cleaned at regular intervals for optimum operation.

Noise

Good acoustics are indispensable for healthy living. Go for windows and doors that offer appropriate noise insulation, and for ventilators that have a ventilation network and pertaining duct system as this will significantly dampen the noise. Then sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet in your home!
