This is what the legislation says about ventilation

Because indoor air often seems to be unhealthier than outside air, 'basic ventilation' has been required by law for all new buildings since 2006. The better we insulate our homes, the more the polluted air lingers and the less fresh air can get in. Since 2016, ventilation systems must also meet certain quality requirements. Time to take a closer look at the legislation on ventilation.

EPB requirements: energy consumption and indoor climate

Because ventilation and energy-efficient living should go hand in hand, certain rules concerning the energy consumption of homes have been laid down in the so-called EPB requirements. For example, new-build homes must have a ventilation system with which you can in principle supply or exhaust 3.6m³ of air per hour per square meter of floor space. This way you can be sure that your home will drain the polluted, moist indoor air sufficiently. Quality stamp for ventilation

Moreover, since 1 January 2016, new houses must meet a certain quality framework for ventilation. You have to draw up two documents for this: a ventilation performance report and a ventilation preliminary design. And for that, you must hire a ventilation reporter.

What about renovations?

Although we only discussed new buildings above, the quality framework also applies to drastic energy-related renovations of residential buildings. With 'normal' renovations, you only have to meet the minimum ventilation requirements and the installation of a ventilation system is not mandatory. Nevertheless, a ventilation system is always a good idea. You not only enjoy a healthier indoor climate, you also save on your energy bill. You can also receive r enovation premiums for installing ventilation.

The benefits of balanced ventilation

When you install a ventilation system, you have the choice of different systems that are legally in order. However, it is good to know that a balanced ventilation system or the so-called system D is the most beneficial. With balanced ventilation you can recover the heat from the exhaust air.
