What determines the cost of a ventilation system?

Our houses are becoming increasingly better insulated, which means ventilation is also becoming more important. A good ventilation system ensures that polluted air is replaced with better quality air. In the interest of good health, we should therefore invest in sound ventilation. But what does a good ventilation system cost precisely?

Why a sound ventilation system is necessary

There are different reasons for investing in good ventilation. The first concerns the air we breathe in and out. When we breathe out, carbon dioxide and vapour are released. These bad substances must be discharged from your home so that you can breathe in clean air. Poor air quality can in fact result in all sorts of health issues, for example allergies, headaches and difficulty concentrating. Also, damp must be eradicated. If that is not done properly, it often results in mould formation. Finally, a good ventilation system can give you significant energy savings.

The total price: a combination of conditions

The start price of your ventilation system depends on the type you choose. A ventilation system C draws in fresh air through vents in windows or doors and mechanically discharges used indoor air. A system D on the other hand, works completely mechanically. That is why a system C is a little cheaper than a ventilation system D. A demand-driven system C comes close to a system D with heat recovery. Ultimately, a system D is significantly cheaper if you take the heat recovery into consideration. After all, you save on your energy bill, since the air drawn in through the ventilation unit absorbs heat from the air discharged. Furthermore, the price depends of course on the cost and number of working hours of the mechanic.

Extra maintenance of your ventilation system

Don’t forget that your ventilation system also requires periodic maintenance. How often your system needs to be checked, depends on the type and the manufacturer. Usually, annual maintenance is enough, but you would be well-advised to vacuum the air filters of a system D every three to four months and to replace them every year. With a system C on the other hand, you need to remember that a C unit does not have any filters, so you must have the ventilator cleaned every year. Also, the vents in your windows must be cleaned every year. After a period of eight years it is better to have the duct network for both ventilation system C and D inspected and if necessary, cleaned by a specialized firm.
